The Great Backyard Bird Count kicks off today, February 14. It is a great way to become aware of yoiur surroundings, begin identifying birds and provide the Cornell Ornithology Lab with a massive amount of data. There is no set amount of time required or number of birds to identify. Last year, my students enjoyed this project and we may have produced a few birders.

In 2013, Great Backyard Bird Count participants in 111 countries counted 33,464,616 on 137,998 checklists, documenting 4,258 species – more than one-third of the world’s bird species.
For those wanting to extend this bird identification activity, eBird offers a way to contribute information all year.
